Launching this fall, the groundbreaking Los Angeles / Islam Arts Initiative (LA/IAI) brings together nearly 30 cultural institutions throughout Los Angeles to tell various stories of traditional and contemporary art from multiple Islamic regions and theirsignificant global diasporas. Anchoring LA/IAI are two connected exhibitions, Doris Duke’s Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art, which presents the tobacco heiress’ impressive collection of Islamic artworks and the companion show, Shangri La: Imagined Cities which showcases relevant contemporary artists and was commissioned by the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). Both are on view from Oct. 26 through December 28 at DCA’s Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) at Barnsdall Art Park (4800 Hollywood Boulevard) with a curator’s talk at 1 p.m. followed by a public opening on Oct. 26 from 2-5 p.m. Please see www.laislamarts.org for more information.
